Abstract

1357536 Converting; control systems for consuming apparatus WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO Ltd 23 July 1971 [13 Oct 1970] 48571/70 Headings H2F and H2H A circuit for regulating the alternating current in a load 1 comprises a chopper 5 operable at a frequency higher than that of the supply 3, 4 and being connected in a bridge circuit D1 ... D4 so as to be operable on both half cycles, the chopper 5 being shunted by the series arrangement of a diode D5 and capacitor C1 so as to pass reactive currents, the charge on C1 being regulated by a rectifying system CSR1 ... CSR4 so as to determine the instantaneous value of the voltage across load 1 when the chopper 5 is conductive. As shown in Fig. 1, the chopping is achieved by thyristor CSR6 which is periodically turned off by a commutating circuit C2, D7 and L2 under control of commutating thyristor OSR5. The effective voltage across load 1 is regulated by control of the mark/space ratio of the trigger pulses fed to thyristors CSR5, CSR6. Capacitor C1 accumulates charge during operation, this charge being maintained constant by a bridge of four thyristors CSR1 ... CSR4 which return surplus energy via transformer T1 to the source 3, 4. In Figs. 3, 4 (not shown) the diode bridge D1 ... D4 is supplied from the secondary of a transformer, the primary being connected between terminal 3 and the upper terminal of load 1. In Fig. 4 the load 1 is fed from the secondary of a transformer, balanced primary windings of which being connected between opposite terminals of bridge D1 ... D4 and the supply terminals 3, 4. In Fig. 6a, the supply to a threephase rectifier 6 is controlled according to the invention by a chopper 5 having the charge on capacitor C1 maintained by means of a threephase bridge of thyristors.
