882,840. Automatic voltage control systems. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. Oct. 20, 1959 [Oct. 22, 1958], No. 35452/59. Class 38 (4). [Also in Group XXXVII] A polyphase alternating current system comprises means to prevent the voltage of any phase from rising to a dangerous value under fault conditions by means of devices which obtain the symmetrical voltage components of the system. A three-phase system 1 is supplied by an alternator 2 having a field winding 3 fed by an exciter 4 controlled by a voltage regulator 6. A circuit 7 is provided which senses the average value-or the positive sequence voltage-of the phase voltages of the system 1, a circuit 8 which senses the negative sequence voltage of the phase voltages and a circuit 9 which senses the zero sequence voltage thereof. The outputs of the circuits 7, 8, 9 are fed to windings 31, 32, 33 respectively of the voltage regulator 6 which output is representative of the highest phase voltage of the system 1. The output of the voltage regulator controls the alternator field 3 by way of the exciter 4 to prevent a dangerous rise in the voltage of any phase due, say, to fault conditions. The voltage regulator 6 may be of the magnetic amplifier type. Alternatively, the voltage regulator may be replaced by an overvoltage relay responsive to the outputs of the circuits 7, 8, 9. Frequency compensation is provided in the circuit 8.
