562,638. Automatic regulation; converting electric currents. PHILIPS LAMPS, Ltd. (Naamlooze Vennootschap Philips' Gloeilampenfabrieken). Sept. 5, 1941, No. 11387. [Class 38 (ii)] A substantially constant unidirectional voltage is obtained from an A.C. voltage over a range of output currents by combining, by means of a rectifier system, the outputs of two transformers 13, 14 having secondary voltages of the same order of magnitude and each supplied from the A.C. voltage 3, of which transformer 14 is unsaturated and 13 is in series with a condenser 2 and has a ferromagnetic core capable of saturation under working conditions. Under no load the secondary voltages are in the same phase, but progressive phase displacement occurs with loading causing-compensation of voltage reduction. A second unsaturated transformer (not shown) may be connected with its secondary in series opposition with the secondary of the saturated transformer. Fig. 5 shows an arrangement wherein the transformers supply through independent rectifier networks 15, 16 in parallel connection a load 12 and buffer battery 11. The secondary windings may be Scott connected to supply through a three-phase rectifier network. A ballast resistance may be connected as by a relay to ensure a minimum loading and prevent excessive no-load voltage.
