Abstract
656,701. Rectifying. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Nov. 25, 1948, No. 30589. [Classes 38 (ii) and 38 (iv)] Relates to high-power rectifying circuit arrangements for the supply of apparatus such as television transmitters. A rectifier 1, 2, has a smoothing filter 5 in its output circuit, reactance being provided in the alternating- current circuit of the rectifier whereby the impedance connected across the input terminals of the filter is more nearly equal to the characteristic impedance of the filter than would be the case in the absence of said reactance. As shown, the rectifier comprises gas-filled diode rectifying valves which are connected to the secondary winding 3 of a step-up transformer, the inductance 6 being connected, in series with transformer primary winding 7, to an alternating-current source 8. The load on the output terminals of the filter is shown as impedance 10. By a suitable choice of the inductance 6 the impedance terminating the filter at its input terminals is rendered approximately constant and equal to the characteristic impedance of the filter over at least a limited range of frequencies and output currents, satisfactory voltage regulation being obtained without excessive power dissipation. The inductance may alternatively be provided by leakage of the transformer, or the inductance may be connected in the transformer secondary circuit. Metal rectifiers may be used. The application to a system involving three or six phase rectification is referred to.
