Abstract

790,123. Rectifying. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Feb. 23, 1956 [Feb. 24, 1955], No. 5588/55. Class 38 (2). A D.C. load such as a traction motor 1 is supplied from a single-phase source 2 through a transformer 3 having a secondary winding to the two ends and a centre tap of which are connected respectively semi-conductor rectifiers 5, 7, 6, whose other terminals are connected to a common point 10, the load 1 together with smoothing means 11 being connected across rectifier 6, and rectifiers 5 and 7 being blocked for the first 60 degrees electrical of each conducting half-cycle of applied voltage. The blocking is by chokes 8, 9 having saturating windings carrying current composed of a series of rectified half-waves opposed by steady D.C. of 'suitable value. The two components are derived from a transformer 12 connected to the A.C. supply 2. The rectified half-waves are obtained from secondary winding 13 through rectifier 20, and the steady D.C. from secondary winding 14 through rectifier 16 connected to resistor 17 through smoothing-circuit 18, 19. The instants at which valves 5, 7 conduct are not altered by changes in supply voltage, e.g. by alteration of autotransformer 4. This arrange-. ment reduces the harmonics in the supply line current.
