Abstract

375,705. Rectifying alternating current. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. -(Assignees of Boyajian, A. ; 55, Stratford Avenue, Pittsfield, Massachusetts, U.S.A.) Dec. 18, 1931, No. 35130. Convention date, Dec. 24, 1930. [Class 38 (ii).] In an arrangement for supplying rectified current from an A.C. source 11 to a load 10 through a grid-regulated valve 13 of the discontinuous control type, an additional source of A.C. 20 of higher frequency and similar voltage to that of the source 11 is connected across the valve in order that the voltage between the anode and cathode falls to zero (as indicated in Fig. 2) or to a sufficiently low value several times per cycle of the source 11 so that the grid may become effective to block the valve at various times during the positive half cycle of anode voltage. The grid control voltage is supplied through a transformer 14 and phase adjusting device 17. Filter circuits. 22, 23 and 24, 25 are provided in each A.C. circuit in order to prevent currents of one frequency flowing in the circuit of the other frequency, and a current limiting resistance 21 is provided in the circuit of the auxiliary frequency.
