Abstract

540,379. Rectifying alternating current; automatic regulation. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO., Ltd. April 12, 1940, No. 6642. Convention date, Oct. 6, 1939. [Classes 38 (ii) and 38 (iv)] The output voltage of a rectifier R is maintained constant under variations in load current or supply voltage by means of a saturable choke comprising a pair of parallel-connected windings P1, P2 in series with the primary or secondary of the supply transformer T. The windings are arranged on the outer limbs of a three-limbed core, and the control winding, which comprises a part in series with the load L and a part in series with the battery B, is arranged on the centre limb which is free from alternating flux. The arrangement is such that the part of the control winding in series with the battery B aids or opposes the part of the control winding in series with the load to effect saturation of the core according as to whether the output voltage of the rectifier is below or above the battery voltage. The battery also serves as a standby supply for the load. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also an arrangement in which the control winding is arranged on the two outer limbs of the core, the A.C. windings then being arranged to produce opposing fluxes. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
