Abstract

532,434. Control of A.C. motors. VICKERS, Inc. Aug. 31, 1939, No. 24948. Convention date, Aug. 31, 1938, [Class 38 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXV] In a transformer in which the secondary surrounds the whole of the flux path provided by the core (i.e in which there is no magnetic shunt) voltage regulation is effected by a saturating winding energized by variable D.C. or variable frequency A.C. The transformer may be applied to speed control of a motor of the type described in Specification 498,586 the windings of which are indicated diagrammatically at A, B, C. The D.C. windings B, C are supplied through a rectifier 30 from the secondary winding 14<1> of the regulating transformer 10<1>. The core of the latter carries also a pair of saturating windings 37, 38 arranged non-inductively with respect to the main windings and included in the circuit of the motor windings B, C in such a manner as to be excited-by A.C. of a frequency dependent on the speed of the motor. Thus variations in motor speed under varying load causes variations in saturating current which regulates the secondary voltage of the transformer in a manner tending to maintain constant speed,
