Abstract

570,375. Transformers. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and BARWICK, E. C. May 12, 1943, No. 7539. [Class 38 (ii)] In an induction regulator particularly suitable for controlling A.C. commutator motors, wherein a variable voltage component in quadrature relation to a constant voltage component is required, the primary and secondary windings are both wound on the stator 1 (or rotor) which has twice as many slots as the co-operating rotor 5 (or stator) and the secondary winding 4, Fig. 2b, has coils such as a, b of the same phase wound about adjacent teeth and in opposition. For the arrangement shown, the coil a is wound on a tooth that is opposite a tooth on the rotor and so is subject to a large flux and has a large induced voltage OA, Fig. 3. The coil h is on a tooth opposite a slot and so has a small voltage AB. The resultant voltage is OB which has a constant component OD and a component DB which would decrease to zero and then increase in the other direction to DB if the rotor were to move through the space of one stator tooth. In a modification, Figs. 4, 5 (not shown), the secondary winding has three coils per phase on three consecutive teeth with the centre coil connected in opposition to the other two coils. With this arrangement the constant voltage component can be made zero or of other desired value by suitably selecting the number of turns on the coils.
