Abstract

384,914. Transformers. MASCHINENFABRIK. OERLIKON, Oerlikon, near Zurich, Switzerland. June 6, 1932, No. 15946. Convention date, June 25, 1931. [Class 38 (ii).] A transformer with adjustable leakage reactance for arc welding comprises a core consisting of three limbs 1, 2, 3 connected by yokes 4, in which the limb 1 carries an energizing winding 7, the limb 2 carries the primary and secondary windings 8, 9, while the limb 3 is provided with one or more air gaps 5 and carries a tapped winding 10 connected in series with the winding 8, the two seriesconnected windings being connected in parallel with the energizing winding 7. The winding 10 functions as a choke coil and enables the load current to be adjusted by varying the tapping connections. In a modification, the energizing winding is arranged as an autotransformer winding with terminals for connection to different supply voltages. In this arrangement the power factor may be improved by connecting a condenser across two of the terminals.
