Abstract

936,792. Automatic voltage control. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. June 8, 1962 [June 12, 1961], No. 22303/62. Class 38 (4). In an automatic alternating voltage control circuit of the type in which a transductor connected in series with a load is controlled over, an amplifier in accordance with the difference between a reference voltage and at least part of the output voltage, the biasing current for the transductor is passed through a resistor, the voltage drop across which, when exceeding the reference voltage, takes over control of the amplifier to limit the biasing current and hence the load current. As shown, a load 5 is supplied over a transductor 6, 6<SP>1</SP>, 8, 8<SP>1</SP> and a fuse 4 with A.C. derived from an inverter 3 connected to a D.C. supply source 1. The voltage across the load is applied to a potentiometer 15 by way of a transformer 9, 11, a rectifier 12 and a smoothing circuit 13, 14, and a tapping on the potentiometer is connected to the base of a transistor 16 which thus compares a voltage proportional to the output voltage with a reference voltage derived from a Zener diode 17 in the emitter circuit of the transistor. The collector of transistor 16 is connected to the control winding 20 of a magnetic amplifier which controls, over an output transformer 30 and a rectifier 31, the current in the biasing windings 8, 8<SP>1</SP> of the transductor whereby the output voltage is maintained constant. The transductor biasing current also passes through a fixed resistor 33 and an adjustable resistor 34, the voltabe across which is also applied to the base of transistor 16, over a diode 35 operating as a gate. The resistor 34 is so adjusted that, on overload, the voltage drop across it becomes larger than the reference voltage across the Zener diode 17 and larger than the voltage derived from the potentiometer 15, whereby the diode 35 is rendered conducting causing a much larger collector current to flow. The bias magnetization of magnetic amplifier 20 is thus reduced and the current through the transductor windings 8, 8<SP>1</SP> is also reduced so that the load current is limited to a safe value.
