Abstract
1275410 Supply systems for electro-slag refining; phase balancing ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 22 July 1969 [30 July 1968] 36354/68 Heading H2H Apparatus for the electro-slag refining of metals comprises two consumable electrodes connected to a multi-phase A.C. supply through a transformer arrangement such that all phases contribute to the total current. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, a watercooled mould 1 contains slag 4 into which consumable electrodes 2, 3 dip. With the passage of current, metal is melted from the electrodes and forms a pool 5. The electrodes 2, 3 are connected to a 3-phase supply 8 through a Scottconnected transformer 6, the secondary windings 9 of which are connected in series. In a further embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), a pair of electrodes may be connected separately across each of the secondary windings. Other arrangements, Figs. 3-6 (not shown), comprise 3-phase transformers in which the primary and secondary windings may each be either star- or delta-connected. Additional electrodes may be connected across secondary windings which are not connected to the first pair of electrodes, or, alternatively, reactive loads may be connected across these other windings in order to achieve balancing.
