429,575. Converting. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. Jan. 28, 1935, No. 2781. Convention date, Jan. 29, 1934. [Class 38 (ii)] In an arrangement for interchanging power between a polyphase A.C. network 1 and a D.C. network such as a regenerative traction system 24 through a transformer 3 and two grid-controlled discharge devices 7, 8 of which 7 is arranged for operation only as a rectifier in association with the transformer secondary 5 whilst 8 is arranged for operation only as an inverter in association with the higher voltage secondary 6, a third grid-controlled discharge device 9 adapted to operate either as rectifier or inverter is arranged so that it may be selectively substituted for either the rectifier 7 or the inverter 8. The substitution is effected in the event of faults arising either in the rectifier or inverter by simple non-currentbreaking changeover switches 13, 15, and 14, 16, the bus-bar circuit-breakers 2, 17 effecting interruption of the load current. A spare transformer unit 3<1> may be substituted for the transformer 3 by actuation of changeover switches 10, 11, 12.
