Each switching choke 11 of a mechanical contact converter has another saturable choke 12 connected in series for full voltage operation, the connection being altered when the converter is operating with reduced volts. This alteration may be the short-circuiting of the other choke 12 by a switch 13, or by connecting the two chokes in parallel. The two chokes may be similar. The secondary windings 1 of the supply transformer may be completely separate and may be reconnected at the same time, e.g. by altering the connections from a to b<SP>1</SP>, the two alterations being made by a single switching- operation if choke 12 is connected appropriately. Alternatively the transformer secondary windings may consist of parts whose connections are re-arranged.
