[Class 38 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXVII] Sparking in mechanical switches employed as a polyphase inverter is prevented by shunting the contacts by a common grid-controlled discharge vessel having as many anodes as there are contacts and a common cathode and. series-connected, auxiliary-voltage source. In an arrangement adapted for full-wave rectification, wherein the load connected across G is controlled by switches K1 ... K6, a six-anode vessel E with auxiliary battery Hand impedances Za, Zk, is supplied by a double three-phase transformer T connected between the switches and chokes D1 ... D3. In Fig. 3, a pair of transformers are employed, and the source H is replaced by an auxiliary transformer T1. The transformer T has low leakage. The gridcontrol is effected either in dependence on voltage-changes in the reactors or by auxiliary switches coupled to the main contacts. Singlephase transformers may replace the polyphase transformer.
