446,541. Converting. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. Jan. 24, 1935, No. 2370. Convention date, Jan. 25, 1934. [Class 38 (ii)] In a converting arrangement comprising grid-controlled discharge devices E in series with a synchronously - operated switching arrangement A for relieving the discharge gaps of reverse voltage during their non- conducting periods means are provided for injecting a commutating voltage of such phase and magnitude as to reduce the reverse voltage appearing at the discharge gaps after commutation but before opening of the switch contacts. In the arrangement shown, the commutating voltage consists of -a harmonic of the operating frequency (the third in the case of a six-phase arrangement) supplied by a generator H connected across the interphase transformer Z. Commutating voltage of non-sinusoidal, e.g. triangular, wave form may be employed and may be produced by connecting condensers to the terminals of the interphase transformer. In the case of rectifier operation, the commutating voltage is made to lag the operating voltage, and in the case of inverter operation, the commutating voltage is made to lead the operating voltage.
