Abstract

548,192. Converting. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO., Ltd., and WALKER, A. H. B. Sept. 24, 1940, No. 14515. [Class 38 (ii)] An inverter comprises a vibratory commutator switch V arranged alternately to charge condensers C1, C2 from the D.C. source S1, S2 through the primary winding of a transformer T and to discharge them in a local circuit including the transformer primary, the transformer core or that of a reactance R in series with the transformer being saturable so that sparkless commutation is obtained over a wide range of load. A condenser C3 connected across either the primary or secondary of the transformer is dimensioned to produce resonance at the operating frequency. Rectifiers K1, K2 may be inserted where indicated to prevent reversal of current prior to opening of the switch contacts at low values of load current.
