412,505. Converting. AKT.-GES. BROWN, BOVERI, ET CIE, Baden, Switzerland. Dec. 29, 1933, No. 36580. Convention date, Dec. 30, 1932. [Class 38 (ii).] Relates to an arrangement employing a grid controlled discharge device V for converting 3-phase current of industrial frequency into single phase current of a higher frequency and consists in connecting the anodes of the discharge device through the primary windings 4, 5, 6 of the single phase transformer T2 to the secondary windings of the three phase transformer T1, commutating condensers 8, 9, 10 being connected across the windings 4, 5, 6. The grids are connected into two groups and are supplied at the higher frequency from a generator G. In a modification, the transformer T1 has a 6-phase secondary with a 3-phase interphase choke and condensers are connected between the ends of the phase windings and the neutral to byepass higher harmonic currents. Since the arrangement is to supply an induction furnace, the transformer T2 may be dispensed with and the induction furnace windings supplied direct. The condensers used for power factor correction can be used as commutation condensers.
