Abstract

392,953. Supply systems. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London, and COE, R. T., Brandeth, Dunchurch Road, Overslade, Rugby. Nov. 20, 1931, No. 32249. [Class 38 (iv).] In order to absorb undesirable harmonics present in an A.C. system a synchronous machine generating a voltage of fundamental frequency and one or more voltages of harmonic frequency is connected to the system. The Figure shows a fundamental frequency generator F coupled to harmonic frequency generators H1, H2, the windings of all being in series and the polepieces of all having squirrel-cage windings to compensate armature reaction. Each machine element has an independent field winding whereby the component voltages may each be varied in amplitude and means such as racking stators are provided for adjusting the phase relationship of each component. The machine may be self-driven and may be coupled to a mechanical load or an auxiliary generator supplying its power to the mains. The harmonic frequency generators may be short-circuited when starting by a switch T. An independently-driven fundamental frequency generator may be connected in series with a motor-driven harmonic frequency generator or a single machine element designed to generate the fundamental and harmonic frequencies may be self-driven or motor -driven from the mains.
