Abstract
551,949. Rotary converters. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and MAGGS, A. H. Sept. 15, 1941, No. 11759. [Class 35] Single-phase is converted into three-phase current by a capacitor type squirrel cage induction motor having a three-phase stator winding of which two legs 3, 4 are connected to the single phase supply 1; 2 when running to provide a main winding and the third leg 5 which may have the same or a different number of turns from each of the other two forms the auxiliary winding and is connected to the third line 9 of the three-phase supply, the other two lines 10, 11 of which are connected to the single-phase supply. Figs. 5 and 6 show starting and running connections respectively. A transformer winding 6 co-phasial with the single-phase supply may be connected in series' with one leg 4 during starting. The capacitors , 7, 8 are connected in parallel for starting and in series for running: An additional winding 12 may be connected in series with auxiliary winding 5 to ensure optimum voltage conditions for the capacitors; the third line is connected to the junction of 5 and 12 in this case. Similar windings 13, 14 may be added to windings 3 and and the three-phase lines are then connected to the outer ends, as shown in Fig. 6, so as to give an increase in output voltage by auto-transformer action.
