Abstract

647,681. Synchronous motors. BRITISH THOMSON - HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and CHOUDHURY, S. U. A. July 13, 1948, No. 18820. [Class 35] [Also in Group XXXVII] The rotor windings of a synchronous induction motor are short-circuited or connected through resistances on one axis and energized through a rectifier on the quadrature axis. In the form shown for a small three-phase motor, the rotor winding 2 is short-circuited at E, F and supplied with D.C. on the other axis by a rectifier 7 and transformer 8, which may be tapped, fed from the mains supply. A condenser 9 is connected across the rectifier. The rotor winding may be mesh or star-connected and may comprise only two phases, one of which is shorted and the other supplied with D.C. In larger machines the rotor terminals are connected through resistances which may be external so that tappings can be used or incorporated in the rotor coils where these are short-circuited on themselves as in the two-phase rotor.
