Abstract

1,162,663. Reactive current converters. LICENTIA PATENT-VERWALTUNGS-G.m.b.H. 21 Sept., 1966 [22 Sept., 1965; 25 Oct., 1965], No. 42157/66. Heading H2F. A force-commutated converter for balancing the load of 3-phase mains and correcting power factor utilizes reverse-current rectifiers and is connected to the load without series chokes. As shown, an induction furnace RL is connected across two phases of 16 2/3-1000 Hz 3-phase mains RST, the loading of which is balanced by a converter using polyphase bridges of semiconductor or mercury-vapour rectifiers 1 . . . 6 and reverse current rectifiers 8 . . . 13. The rectifiers 1 . . . 6 are commutated by controlled rectifiers 1<SP>1</SP> . . . 6<SP>1</SP> connected via LC circuits L2, C L . The controlled rectifiers are triggered by control circuits supplied from a phase shifting transformer Ph, including trigger circuit Tr, AND gates and 1 . . . 6, and amplifiers V1 . . . V6. The phasing of the control pulses fed to rectifiers 1 . . . 6 is arranged to be such as to correct the power factor and balance the load. A storage capacitor C included in the converter may be bridged by a battery or fuel cells as a stand-by supply. Resonant circuits LsCs, Res1, Res2 and inductors L1 are provided as harmonic suppressors. Inductors L1 may have differing values. The controlled rectifier in the most lightly loaded phase may have reduced ratings or may be replaced by reverse diodes.
