Abstract

412,955. Converting. AKT.-GES. BROWN, BOVERI, ET CIE, Baden, Switzerland. Oct. 4, 1932, No. 27519. Convention date, Oct 10, 1931. [Class 38 (ii).] To regulate the direction and magnitude of the flow of energy between the bus-bars of a central power-station and an external line supplied from further generators at the same frequency as those of the station, a regulable mercury-vapour converter is interposed between the bus-bars and the line. The flow of effective power is regulated by varying the phase between the line voltage and the voltage induced in the line or secondary side of the converter, and the wattless power is regulated by varying the magnitude of this induced voltage. The converter may be regulated by grid control in dependence on a day chart of the power to be transmitted, a driven template controlling a phase-shifting transformer. To interchange energy between the 3-phase systems P<1>, Q<s>, Fig. 1, the nine anodes of the converter U are connected to secondary windings 1-9 the star points O<1>-O<3> of which are connected to the windings P coupled to the system Q<s> and connected to the converter cathode K. The grids of the converter U are controlled to allow current to flow through the windings 1-9 in cyclic succession. To control the grids, synchronous motors M<1>, M<2>, Fig. 3, connected to the systems P<1>, Q<s> through adjustable phaseshifting transformers U<1>, U<2> rotate brushes over commutator segments C<1>-C<4> connected to biassing batteries B<1>-B<2> and to the grids, the three grids 7<1>-9<1> controlling the anodes connected to the windings 7-9 alone being shown. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 389,722 and 400,290.
