426,146. Converting. BRITISH THOMSON - HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Allgemeine Elektricitõts-Ges. ; 2, Friedrich Karl-Ufer, Berlin) Dec. 4, 1933, No. 34062. Convention date, Dec. 2, 1932. [Class 38 (ii)] In converting A.C. to D.C. or vice versa by means of grid-controlled discharge devices 10, 20, 30 associated with rotary switches 41, 4<11> whereby the discharge paths are relieved of voltage during the non-conducting periods, the grid potentials are distributed by rotary switches 40v, 40n operating in fixed phase relationship with the switches 4<1>, 4<11> in the discharge circuits. The grid potentials are derived from delta-connected resistances 5<1>, 5<11>, 5<111> fed from the secondary windings 1, 2, 3, of the main supply transformer. The two groups of switches are driven from a common synchronous motor the stator of which may be angularly adjusted to effect voltage regulation of the converter by adjusting the moment at which the discharge is initiated at each cycle. Phase shift of the grid voltages derived from the resistances 5<1>, 5<11>, 5<111> may be effected by providing phase-shifting transformers to determine the phase of the potentials at the terminals 11, 2<1>, 3<1>, or by shifting the tappings on the resistances.
