Abstract

543,501. Converting. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd. Sept. 16, 1940, No. 14228. Convention date, Sept. 16, 1939. [Class 38 (ii)] In an arrangement for interchanging power between D.C. and A.C. circuits or between two A.C. circuits through a plurality of grid controlled discharge paths 20 ... 25 associated with star-connected transformer windings 13, 14 forced commutation for control of power factor is obtained by injecting commutating voltages of appropriate harmonic frequency between the star points of the windings through two transformers 30, 31 the primaries of which are in series. Thus, outside the commutating period, i.e. when only one anode is conducting, one of the secondaries of the transformers 30, 31 is open circuited causing a limitation of current drawn from the source 29 of harmonic voltage, while full voltage is developed across the open circuited winding and is available for commutation when an anode associated with that winding is rendered conductive. Specification 409,713 is referred to.
