Abstract
385,868. Frequency and phase changing transformers. AKT.-GES. BROWN, BOVERI, ET CIE, Baden, Switzerland. June 22, 1932, No. 17677. Convention date, June 22, 1931. [Class 38 (ii).] In an arrangement for converting polyphase A.C. at one frequency to single-phase A.C. at a lower frequency the input transformer Tr has a star connected secondary Q each phase of which is connected to two anodes of a rectifier G through the oppositely directed primary coils PI, P<1>1, &c. of a single-phase output transformer TII. The anodes are arranged in two groups, one group being connected to primaries P1, P2, &c. and the other group being connected to primaries P1, P<1>1. &c. A synchronously running distributer S controls the grids, each contact being connected to the control grids of two anodes, one in each group, phase displaced 180‹ so that although both grids are energized only one anode will conduct. The numbers of turns in the groups of primary windings P1 .. P6, P<1>1 .. P<1>6 are graded so that the voltages induced in the secondary Q1 conform approximately to a sine curve. The contacts are arranged on the distributer so that in each half cycle one anode (the anode commencing the half cycle) conducts twice ; in the example shown in the drawing each half wave will be composed of seven loops. The cathode of the rectifier G is connected to the star point of secondary Q through a choke D which damps down current surges. The Specification describes a construction of the transformer TII in which the primary winding, composed of disc-shaped coils, is arranged inside and outside a cylindrical secondary winding.
