Abstract

679,653. Converting. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., FRIEDLANDER, E. S. Nov. 29, 1950 [Nov. 29, 1949], No. 30599/49. Class 38 (ii) A polyphase electric inverting system comprising a discharge vessel 10 having a plurality of anodes 11 and associated control grids 12 or the like, an inverter transformer 16 and capacitance 28 connected in the alternating current side of the system to provide the commutating reactance, has the inverter transformer 16 arranged to operate as a saturable reactor by the provision of windings 17 supplied with direct current. The windings 17 are supplied from the A.C. side of the system over a rectifier 18 arranged so that the value of the direct current may be variable. Further commutating reactance may be provided in the form of capacitors 27 connected between the anodes of the discharge vessel, the grids thereof being supplied from the A.C. side of the system by way of a phase shifter 22 and grid transformer 21. The primary windings 15 of the inverter transformer are connected to the positive terminal of the D.C. supply through a series of 'interphase transformers 23, 25. The frequency of the A.C. obtained from the system may be controlled by varying the phase of the grid voltage and variation of the saturation of the inverter transformer controls the output voltage of the system. The oscillations which occur during commutation may be damped by devices such as those described in Specification 530,963. The Provisional Specification also refers to Specifications 522,011 and 610,054.
