Abstract

398,327. Converting. AKT.-GES. BROWN, BOVERI, ET CIE, Baden, Switzerland. Aug. 3, 1932, No. 21750. Convention date, Aug. 3, 1931. [Class 38 (ii).] Relates to an arrangement for interchanging power between D.C. networks. Associated with the networks a, b and c, d respectively, are pairs of vapour discharge devices GI, GII, and GIII, GIV, the anodes of which are connected to polyphase windings Q1, Q2, and Q3, Q4 of a transformer T that has an energizing winding P fed from a three-phase network N. The secondary star-points and cathodes of each pair are cross-connected (e.g. the star point of Q1 is connected to the cathode of GII). Discharge devices GII and GIV are provided with grid control to enable them to function as inverters, and the grid control is such that the discharge device associated with the network supplying power does not conduct current. If power is flowing from a, b to c, d, D.C. is converted to A.C. by means of GII and is fed via the windings Q2, Q3 and the rectifier GIII to the D.C. circuit c, d. If the D.C. circuits have a common conductor then the two discharge devices associated therewith may have a common containing vessel and cathode. All the discharge devices may have control grids, and regulation may be obtained by an adjustment of the phase of the grid potentials. The arrangement also permits of interchange of power between the A.C. network N and the D.C. networks a, b and c, d. Preferably choking coils D1, D2 are included in the D.C. circuits. Specifications 395,873 and 396,202 are referred to.
