[Class 38 (ii)] A flat topped voltage wave, particularly for supplying rectifiers to give a smooth output voltage, is produced by combining a number of phase-displaced peaky voltages as shown by 23, 24, 25, Fig. 2. Fig. 1 shows an arrangement for producing 3-phase voltage in which transformers 4, 5, 6 operating at saturation each have three secondary windings. Each anode of the device 16 is supplied from three secondaries connected in series and having voltages 60‹ phase displaced, e.g. the anode 17 is supplied from the secondaries 7, 8 and 9, one being reversed. In a modification for supplying a 6-anode discharge device, each transformer has six secondaries. In a further modification for supplying a 12-anode discharge device six transformers are used, their primaries being connected either in zigzag or in parallel to the 3-phase supply so that the transformer fluxes are 30‹ phase displaced. Instead of three single phase transformers, a three-phase transformer with an additional core may be used, and where six transformers are used, two threephase transformers having a common yoke may be used.
