Abstract

330,819. Electrical Apparatus Co., Ltd., and Barbour, R. H. July 31, 1929. Regulating transformers. - The interaction between a pair of windings X, Y arranged 90‹ apart on a stator S is varied by adjustment of a rotor R. The pole-pieces of both rotor and stator are slotted so as to cause saturation in the teeth thereby formed, thus minimizing disturbance of flux distribution by secondary load current, and reducing the inductance of the secondary winding. A short-circuited ring W is placed on the rotor to assist in reducing flux disturbance and inductance of secondary winding. The windings may be connected in series or they may be connected in separate primary and secondary circuits. Alternately, the primary winding may be arranged in two series-connected parts with the secondary winding connected to the point of interconnection of the primary parts. When arranged in this way the transformer may be used for starting and controlling A.C. motors as described in Specification 330,181, or it may be used for obtaining a gradual change of voltage from one tap to the next in a tapped transformer as shown in Fig. 2.
