Boosting by static transformers.-The voltage of single-phase and 3-phase lines is regulated by one or more transformers T<1> - - T<3>, Fig. 2, with one winding S in series with the line L and with the other windings D shunt-connected across the line L or across separate lines supplied from the line L through a transformer, switches F allowing the windings D to be short-circuited or to be inserted under load in one direction or the other. Movement of the switches F regulates the voltage without interrupting the line, the regulation being in seven steps from a maximum with all the windings D under load in one direction through a mean with the windings D short-circuited to a minimum with the windings D under load in the other direction. The shunt connections may be before-or behind or, as shown, between the coils T' - - T<3>, The regulating transformers may have separate cores and windings, or three cores may carry a single winding S, Fig. 5, each core having a separate winding D. In a 3-phase arrangement, the transformer cores are combined and the windings S, D are arranged as in Fig. 6, the intermediate yokes carrying no flux if the windings D are used in one direction only and being increased in size to carry the flux if the windings D are used in both directions.
