518,632. Phase changing. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO., Ltd., STEVENS, S. A., and WALKER, A. H. B. Aug. 30, 1938, No. 25402. [Class 38 (ii)] In apparatus for converting single-phase into polyphase current and comprising an inductance a and condenser b connected in series across the single-phase supply X, Y, a choke d is connected across the condenser and saturation effects in the cores of the choke d and inductance a are utilized to limit the rise of voltage across the inductance and condenser under varying load conditions. Modifications are described in which (1) the choke d and inductance a are provided with regulating tappings, (2) the condenser is connected through a step-up transformer, (3) the choke d and inductance a are arranged on the outer limbs of a common three-limbed core the centre limb of which may carry a further ,tapped winding in series with the inductance and condenser and (4) the inductance a is in two sections which with the choke d form a starconnected winding affording a neutral point on the three-phase side.
