526,014. Inductances. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd. March 6, 1939, No. 7279. Convention date, March 5, 1938. [Class 38(ii)] Relates to a choke arrangement comprising two three-phase chokes I, II, Fig. 2, connected in parallel and having windings connected respectively either in delta and star as shown, or in such a way as to give a similar phase relationship between the. core phases, and employed for reactance compensation in a supply system, the cores being operated near saturation to give an inductance which varies in dependence on the applied. voltage, and consists in suppressing the 3rd, 5th and 7th harmonic fluxes in the cores. In the form shown in Fig. 2, 3rd harmonic flux suppression in the choke I is effected by means of the main delta-connected winding W # and in the choke II by means of an auxiliary delta-connected winding Wk. The separate cores may be replaced by three-three limbed cores, each core having a winding of each group arranged on it. The limb which carries the difference flux may be made smaller. In the form shown in Fig. 3a, each choke is provided with a main winding in delta connection, and the required phase relationship between the fluxes is obtained by connecting the winding U1, VI, W1 to tappings on the windings U, V, W. In a further modification two three-phase cores may be used, the cores preferably having either slotted yokes, reduced middle limbs, or one or more additional limbs to equalize the flux distribution.
