Regulating transformers.-The voltage applied to an alternating-current circuit is raised or lowered by means of two or more short-circuited auxiliary windings connected in series and wound on the limbs of a transformer of which the primary winding is connected to the supply circuit, one or more of the auxiliary windings being provided with tappings. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the transformer core has three limbs on which are mounted the secondary windings A, B, C. The winding A may also serve as the primary winding, as shown, or a separate primary winding inductively connected to the winding A may be provided. All three secondary windings are connected in series, the winding B acting in opposition to the winding A while the winding C acts with the winding A. Auxiliary windings a, b, c are provided on the limbs of the core, these windings being connected in series in a circuit around which current is caused to circulate in one direction by closing a pair of switches E, F, or in the reverse direction by closing another pair of switches G, H. The strength of this current and its consequent regulating effect on the voltage at the secondary terminals x, y is varied by means of an arm D engaging tappings on the winding a. In a modification, Fig. 2, auxiliary windings b, c are provided on the same limbs as the secondary windings B, C and any desired portion of either auxiliary winding is connected in series with the whole of the other winding by means of switches I, J and arms D<1>, D<2> engaging tappings on the windings.
