Abstract

Cut-out arrangements.-In protective arrangements for alternating current systems and apparatus employing a biassing transformer with operating and secondary windings inductively related to one another and a restraining winding not inductively related to the other two windings, as described in the parent Specification, the operating, secondary and restraining windings are each divided and equal portions of each are mounted on each of two core parts constituting the magnetic structure. In the form shown in Fig. 1, in which a single three-limbed core which may have an air-gap, is employed, the outer limbs are wound with one half of each of the three windings 2, 3, 4. The portions of the restraining winding 4 on each core are reversely connected to one another so that the winding as a whole is not inductively related to the other windings. In order to control the effect of the restraining winding when conditions are normal, a variable or fixed resistance is connected in shunt with the winding or an additional short-circuited winding 17, inductively related to the restraining winding and provided with a fixed or variable resistance 16, may be divided between the cores. These means for controlling the effect of the restraining winding give the same advantages as if there were an air gap in the magnetic circuit. The biassing transformer may comprise two separate ring cores 5, 6, Fig. 2, upon each of which are arranged equal portions of the three windings, the portions of the restraining winding on each core being reversely connected and the portions of the other two windings being connected in the same sense. The arrangement is shown with a variable resistance connected in shunt with the restraining winding.
