Abstract

725,372. Transformers and inductors. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. April 28, 1953 [May 17, 1952], No. 11698/53. Class 38 (2). A laminated core structure 84 is characterized in that in addition to the normal insulating material 87 between the laminations 85 there is provided between the laminations extra insulation in the shape of the members 92, 94 which divide the structure into three parts 86, 88, 90, which sections are earthed as shown at 96, 98, 100. Thus when a voltage impulse is applied to the windings associated with the core structure, electrostatic voltage gradients are produced across the core sections which may be sufficient to break down the normal insulation 87 between the laminations 85. However, due to the core structure being divided into three sections the electromagnetic voltages induced in the core sections 86, 88, 90 by the windings are not so great as to increase the core losses unduly. Any number of extra insulating members may be used and the core sections may be earthed at the end lamination instead of at the centre one.
