Abstract

540,434. Transformers. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd. Nov. 25, 1940, No. 16915. Convention date, Nov. 24, 1939. [Class 38 (ii)] A transformer comprises an annular core 11 formed of spirally wound strip, primary and secondary windings 13, 14 arranged side by side, an insulating barrier 28 between the windings and an insulating cylinder between the windings and the core. The windings have stepped sides and are supported on insulating rings 15, 19. The elements forming the insulating barriers 28 and the insulating cylinder 24, 25 are formed as shown in the exploded view, Fig. 5, to interlock with each other on assembly, the core structure, which is applied by the method described in Specification 501,474, serving to maintain the cylinder halves together. Insulation 27 is provided between the core 11 and casing 42, and in order to distribute voltage stresses symmetrically, an electrostatic shield 43 insulated from the core but connected to the high voltage winding 13 is provided so that the total capacity from the high voltage winding to the core equals the total capacity from the core to earth. For insulation and cooling purposes the casing may be filled with liquid or with a mixture of sand and wax.
