Abstract
1500484 Ignition coils A WALTHEW 19 Feb 1975 [20 Nov 1973] 53807/73 Heading HIT An ignition coil has a magnetic core winding leg formed from two different magnetic materials. As shown in Fig. 3 the leg comprises a ferrite rod 3 surrounded by soft iron rods 4, but other iron/ferrite and ferrite/ferrite arrangements are disclosed. The core is surrounded by an insulating coil former 5 which is splined or corrugated to provide passages for cooling oil, and which bears a secondary winding 7 over which is a primary winding 6. The primary winding may be of strip or paired conductors and its layers may be separated by layers of PTFE having ribs 8 to provide further cooling passages. The secondary winding may be layers of wire interspersed with glass fibre kraft paper, or it may be a printed circuit. The magnetic path may be completed by iron or alloyed iron end plates and semicylindrical members (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown). Details of the manner in which the windings are connected to terminals 12, 16 are given.
