Abstract

866,546. Inductors and transformers. AMERICAN MACHINE & FOUNDRY CO. Oct. 11, 1957 [Oct. 12, 1956], No. 31918/57. Class 38 (2). An inductor or transformer comprises a plurality of single layer spirally wound coils of insulated metal ribbon 16, 52, 54, which are interconnected by flat conducting members such as 26 or 56 which may be provided with extending portions which act as terminals. In one embodiment (Figs. 2 and 3) each coil is wound on an insulating former 18<SP>11</SP> disposed on a leg of a laminated magnetic core. Each member 26 is sandwiched between insulating members 18<SP>1</SP>, 18<SP>11</SP> and has a tab 40 which contacts the innermost turn of a coil and a projection 28 which receives conducting rods 24 which interconnect the coils and also act as terminals. Connection to intermediate points in a coil may be made by bent conducting members 42. The unit is assembled in a metal container which may be filled with resin. The members 26 may be formed by printing or etching, may be of various shapes, and may be provided with tabs for contacting both adjacent coils. They may also be provided with projections which are connected to conducting portions printed on an insulating sheet instead of to rods 24 (Fig. 5, not shown) or these projections may be bent to various shapes to act as terminals. The members 56 may also be increased in area to conduct heat away from the coils. The coils may be of metal ribbon insulated with paper or varnish. The transformer may be impregnated with or cast in epoxy resin.
