Regulating transformers.-A relay 4 is included in the secondary circuit 3 of a current transformer, and is caused to operate at any desired value of the current in the primary circuit 2 by means of an adjustable magnetic shunt 7. The secondary winding may also be provided with tappings for connecting to the relay. Auxiliary windings, normally opposing each other, may be wound on the limbs of the magnetic circuit between the shunt 7 and the secondary winding, the arrangement being such that if one of these windings is short-circuited, the current in the other creates a large flux through the secondary winding and causes instantaneous operation of the relay. An arrangement for producing successive operation of a series of relays 24, 29. 30, placed at different points of a network supplied from a source 23, is shown in Fig. 4. In this arrangement, if a short-circuit occurs at the point 22, the relay 24 is the first to operate, but if the fault occurs between the points 19, 20 or 20, 21 one of the auxiliary windings 25, 27 on the transformers 20<1>, 21<1> ceases to carry current, while an excessive current flows through the remaining winding 26 or 28 and causes instantaneous operation of the relay 29 or 30.
