Transformers.-A transformer for supplying a welding or cutting are has its secondary in the form of three windings 16, 17, 18 in series and wound on separate legs of a core having no air gaps. The leg 13 is of less cross-section than and forms a shunt to the other two legs, the winding thereon acting as a baiance winding. At light loads the core 13 shunts a large proportion of the flux produced by the primary 14, but as the secondary current rises, the opposing magneto motive force produced by the current in coil 17 causes a reduction in this shunt effect. A still further increase results in a reversal of potential in the coil 17. This action tends to keep the E.M.F. in the secondary constant. Taps on the coil 18 allow the output to be adjusted to the load; or a movable core may be used for this purpose. By having duplicate sets of secondary windings on the same or different legs, two arcs may be supplied.
