392,193. Transformers. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London, MAYO, C. G., 17, Alexandra Road, and MATHEWS, P., 7, Bilton Rise, both in Rugby. Nov. 6, 1931, No. 30829. [Class 38 (ii).] The regulation of a transformer is improved by providing a magnetic shunt between the primary and secondary windings, the shunt being designed to be saturated under all operating conditions. The flux therein is thus of constant magnitude but becomes phase displaced with respect to the main flux linking the secondary winding when load current of other than zero power factor flows whilst at no load both fluxes are in phase. Thus the flux linking with the secondary is smaller (by an amount equal to the shunt flux) than the total flux linking with the primary at no load, and increases with load current to maintain the same resultant flux linking with the primary as the shunt flux becomes displaced in phase. Figs. 1 and 2 show alternative ways of arranging the magnetic shunt a and primary and secondary windings b, c. In a further form, the shunt path may be formed by a separate core.
