Abstract
193,434. British Thomson - Houston Co., Ltd., and Fitzgerald, A. S. Aug. 22, 1921. Protective arrangements.-In an alternating current protective arrangement, a static transformer is employed having primary and secondary windings and also a third or restraining winding not inductively related to the primary and secondary windings, but adapted to receive current which regulates the flux set up by the primary winding and interlinked with the secondary, so controlling the induced secondary current which passes through a relay. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the primary and secondary windings 2, 3 are wound on the inner limb of the core 1, two sections of the restraining winding 4 being wound on the outer limbs. The flux produced by the current in the coil 4 follows the dotted path, and although not being interlinked with the primary or secondary windings, yet by saturating or partially saturating the magnetic circuit of these windings regulates the effective primary flux, cutting the secondary turns. In Fig. 4 the restraining winding is on the inner limb, which is provided with an air gap, the divided primary and secondary windings being arranged so that the electromotive forces in their sections produced by current in the restraining winding 4 are equal and opposing. As applied to the protection of an electric circuit or winding 8, the circulating current provided by series transformers 9, 10 passes through the restraining winding 4, the primary winding 1 being connected between equipotential points as shown, and the secondary winding supplying a relay 7. In a further alternative, Fig. 3, two cores are employed and two restraining windings 4, 5 arranged so as to be non- inductive with each other and with the primary and secondary windings 2, 3. This arrangement may be used with the system shown in Fig. 2 of Specification 188,001, the restraining windings being supplied by line fault currents and earth fault currents.
