493,230. Transformers ; protective arrangements. SIEMENS - SCHUCKERTWERKE AKT.-GES. Aug. 17, 1937, No. 22617. Convention date, Aug. 17, 1936. [Classes 38 (ii) and 38 (iv)] In a system in which harmonics are produced by apparatus having a magnetic core, and elimination of these is effected by means of an auxiliary choke coil or transformer producing similar but phase displaced harmonics, the iron core of the auxiliary choke coil or transformer is arranged to require a greater magnetizing force than the core of the main apparatus. This may be obtained by operating the core at a higher saturation than the core of the main apparatus, or iron may be used having a magnetization curve with a sharper bend than that used for the core of the main apparatus. The auxiliary choke coil or transformer may be connected in series, parallel or cascade with the main apparatus, and may be provided with tappings to enable adjustment to be effected. The Figure shows a cascade connected arrangement in which the core 11 of the choke coil 16 is structurally combined with the core 10 of the main apparatus. A star-connected tertiary winding 15 is provided on the main core to which the delta connected choke coil 16 is connected. The Specification states that when operating on a line having Peterson coil protection not affected by harmonics except in the event of a fault, the auxiliary choke coil or transformer is normally disconnected from the line and means are provided such as an earthleakage indicating relay for connecting it to the line when a fault occurs.
