[Class 38 (iv).] An arrangement for earthing the neutral point of a polyphase system comprises a single - phase reactance coil connected between the neutral point 2 and earth, and an auxiliary reactance 10 which can be connected at will across a secondary winding 6 interlinking the magnetic circuit of the reactance coil 1, or across part of this reactance coil itself. The windings 6, 10 are tapped so that the ratio of the turns connected may be varied while the actual number of turns between the neutral point and earth remains constant. The windings 1, 6 may be connected in series as shown in Fig. 3. The coils 1, 6, 10 may be carried on a common core structure, for example a four-legged core having two inner legs provided with air gaps and two outer legs of half the sectional area of the inner legs, the coils 1, 6 being arranged on one of the inner legs and the coil 10 on the other. 'Alternatively a three-legged core may have the coils 1, 6 on one leg of the core, which leg is provided with air gaps, the winding 10 being wound on a second leg. In a modification, the auxiliary reactance coil 10 may be wound on a magnetic core with air gaps and arranged as a structure separate from the core of the reactance 1.
