Abstract

Transformers. - To obtain constant voltage for electric measure. ments from variable voltage supply mains, such as a town supply, a transformer is used having a core with three limbs 1, 2, 3. The limb 1 is saturated and the limbs 2, 3 are not saturated. The main part a of the primary winding is wound on the saturated limb and additional regulating windings b, c are placed on one. or both of the unsaturated limbs; the regulating windings are in series with the main winding and may assist or oppose this winding. The secondary consists of a winding on at least one of the unsaturated limbs; it may be on two or on all the limbs. In each case the winding is arranged so that the resultant electromotive force produced is constant; where the secondary winding is on one limb only the flux therein-by the arrangement of the regulating primary winding-is kept constant, but where the secondary is on two or more limbs the flux through each limb may vary with variable supply voltage the resultant however being constant. An air gap 8, the width of which is decided experimentally, is left between the limb 2 and the cross bar 7. A gap 9 is made in the saturated limb to make the flux curve approximately straight. The laminations of the limb 1 are displaceable for the same purposes.
