Abstract

564,972. Converters. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. (General Electric Co.). Sept. 29, 1943, No. 15992. [Class 38 (ii)] In converting apparatus wherein a D.C. source 10 periodically energizes the primary 13 of a transformer through a vibratory switch 20, the secondary 14 which supplies the A.C. load circuit 11 has in series with it a compensating winding 15 closely coupled with the primary 13 and a saturable magnetic shunt 17, 18 provides a loose coupling between the secondary and the other windings. The compensating winding 15 introduces a magnetomotive force in the magnetic circuit of the primary tending to prevent the rise of primary current during the operation of the switching means and so helping to prevent sparking at the switching contacts even when the supply voltage varies considerably. The transformer core may consist of two sets of E-shaped punchings placed with their legs abutting excepting for some of the lower set of punchings which are reversed so as to provide the magnetic shunt 17, 18. A condenser 19 enables tuning to be effected. Specification 645,854 is referred to.
