Abstract
424,316. Converting. MARX, E., 43<1>, Husarenstrasse, Brunswick, Germany. May 8, 1934, No. 13897. Convention date, June 24, 1933. [Class 38 (ii)] In an arc converter, e.g. for energizing a D.C. line 2 from a transformer 1, the discharge at the main electrodes 3, 4, is initiated by an auxiliary voltage produced in a starting circuit comprising the secondary of an auxiliary transformer 7 with shunt condenser 10, series condensers 11, and either one or a pair of auxiliary discharge gaps 19, 20 in series with the gap at the main electrodes 3, 4. The timing of the starting voltage impulses is determined by a rotary contact maker 9 in series with the primary of the transformer 7 and driven synchronously with the A.C. voltage. High resistances 12 are connected across the condensers 11 for ensuring discharge of the latter between successive initiations of the arc. Rotary switches or inductances may be used in place of the condensers 11 as means for excluding main current from the starting circuit. Series chokes 14, 15, with or without shunt condensers 16, 17 are connected as shown to exclude starting voltage impulses from the supply and load circuits.
