Abstract
578,875. Impulse generators. BRITISH THOMSON - HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and WILKINSON, K. J. R. Dec. 8, 1941, No. 15797. [Class 40 (v)] [Also in Group XXXV] Recurrent voltage impulses are produced by charging a condenser 5, or a network of series inductance and shunt capacity elements, from a single-phase source 1 through a transformer 3, and periodically discharging it through a gasfilled discharge tube or a spark gap 6 and load 7. An inductance 2 allows a desired choice of the resonant frequency of the charging circuit. The device 6 is triggered by a pulse applied thereto by the secondary coil of a peaking transformer 4, thereby effecting the discharge at the instant at which the source 1 is supplying zero current. When the device 6 is a gas-filled discharge tube, the ratio of the resonant frequency of the network to the working frequency is chosen between 0.5 and 0.8, or between 1.3 and 1.6. For a triggered spark gap, the ratio should lie between 0.8 and 1.3.
