Abstract

589,129. Impulse generators. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and WILKINSON, K. J. R. July 20, 1942, No. 10120. [Class 40 (v)] Recurrent voltage impulses obtained by charging a capacity or a capacitance network and causing it to discharge into a load by means of a triggered spark gap are initiated by an impulse applied to the trigger electrode of the gap, obtained from the secondary of a peaking transformer whose primary is energized by the charging current or a current proportional thereto, the output of the transformer being used to charge a condenser the energy from which is released to the trigger gap by an auxiliary gap in such a manner that the rate of rise in voltage is of the order 4 Kv per Á second. The Figure shows an' alternating source 1 charging a pulse shaping capacitance network 2 as disclosed in Specification 589,128 through a transformer 3. The network is discharged by a triggered gap 4 as disclosed in Specification 580,003, into a load connected at terminals 15. The primary of a peaking transformer 5 as disclosed in Specification 574,768. [Group XXXV], is connected in series with the source 1 arranged to charge a condenser 7 through a limiting, resistance 6, and is shunted by a load in series with a rectifier 8 so that the secondary peak voltages at alternate waves are insufficient to trigger the gap. Alternatively, the rectifier may be connected across a tertiary winding on the transformer. The discharge circuit of condenser 7 includes inductance 9, condenser 10 and auxiliary and trigger electrodes 11, 12, of the spark gap 4,condenser 10 is shunted by resistance 14. The breakdown of the auxiliary gap 11, 12 induces a voltage between the trigger and main electrodes 12, 13 dependent on the values of condensers 7, 10 and increases the current in the prelimmary ionizing spark. The inductance 9 may form the primary winding of a transformer whose secondary winding feeds a synchronizing voltage to a monitor cathode-ray tube. Specification 578,875 also is referred to.
